Yoga to cure snoring

Could Yoga help to cure a snoring problem? No ratings yet.

Snoring is a problem that affects roughly one half of all humans at some point or another. It affects more men than women, but a significant number of both will eventually become regular snorers. About 40% of men and 24% of women will eventually succumb to ‘habitual snoring’… and if you are one of them, you have probably realized that snoring isn’t always a ‘simple nuisance’ as some might believe.

Snoring can keep you awake, but it can also keep your sleeping partner awake. Many spouses/partners who have a snoring bedpartner suffer from a lack of sleep due to the problem. Of course, some try to curb the sleep loss by wearing earplugs, turning on a fan, or by sleeping in a separate room – but often, the best way to solve the problem is by removing the source.

That means finding a remedy that will actually work.

Can Yoga help with your snoring problem?

Yoga is becoming a very popular activity lately, as people become more health-conscious and concerned for their own well-being. It seems like there are more local Yoga classes and Yoga video tutorials available than there have ever been before.

This got us to thinking… could Yoga possibly help as a remedy for snoring?

It is, after all, hailed as a wonderful habit for the spirit, mind, and body… so is it possible that it could play a role in diminishing a person’s odds for snoring as well?

As it turns out, it just might.

It helps you to lose weight

Most Yoga practitioners lose weight after they begin the habit – which can actually do a lot to help lower their odds of snoring. Weight loss can help to cure snoring by reducing fatty tissue in the neck and around the airway – which cuts down on soft palate vibration… the number-one cause of snoring.

It strengthens the airway muscles

One aspect of Yoga that is central to the practice is controlled breathing. As it turns out, all of the controlled breathing done in different poses can do a lot to help strengthen your neck and throat muscles – which can also directly contribute to reducing those pesky (and noisy) soft palate vibrations.

Chanting the ‘Om’ mantra could also contribute to better airway muscles as well.

It can help to decongest the breathing passages

Some Yoga poses can also help with decongestion. Not all snoring is caused by airway congestion, obviously… but this can certainly help if you happen to be experiencing snoring problems because of allergies or a cold.

It can help to support better living habits

Oftentimes, Yoga practitioners who stick with the habit are also drawn into other healthy and positive habits – including a better diet and an increase in physical exercise. These types of changes can do wonders for a snoring problem, because they can promote healthy weight loss and can enable you to firm up the tissue around your throat.

Yoga can also help you to establish better healthy sleeping patterns – which might also be a crucial step to keeping you from being sleep deprived – which is really the entire point.

Tips to get you started

If you’re a snorer, but interested in possibly trying out Yoga as a remedy, then here are some helpful tips that might motivate you to get started.

If you are a social person, try checking out local listings for Yoga classes. You can usually find fliers for such groups in local fitness and health-food establishments. You can also look online for listings in your area.

If you tend to be more of a home-body, you might want to consider buying a Yoga DVD or looking up some Yoga poses online. There are a ton of fantastic YouTube channels dedicated to this niche, and some of them are posted by true, professional Yoga instructors.

This could be a fantastic avenue for someone who doesn’t necessarily love the idea of doing Yoga around other people or in a public setting.
