O2Vent Mono Review

The O2Vent Mono (formerly called the Oventus Clearway Device) is a new type of mouthguard/mandibular advancement device that’s being produced by a company called Oventus. The company actually developed the product after working with CSIRO, and has presented it as a stop snoring device with a ton of potential. It approaches the problem of snoring with a new perspective that we’ve not seen in a device like this before – so we were especially excited to get to learn more about it.

Because the product is designed specifically for the patient, and not custom-fitted upon arrival, it requires a bit more time and effort to acquire – but the results may certainly be worth it.

It’s also a bit more expensive than similar devices – but it should also be noted that the O2Vent Mono goes a bit above and beyond in a lot of ways.

But is the higher cost really worth it, or is the device too expensive to be worth the money?

These are fair questions, and to answer them, you really need to take all considerations into account.

Here are our thoughts on the product, the cost, and the value offered by the company.

Product Details

The O2Vent Mono technically falls into the category of “Mandibular Advancement Device”, but it does so in a way that’s very different from other mouthpieces. While most mouthpieces work only by advancing the jawline slightly, this device also helps to redirect air to the sides of the mouth. It basically has a breathing port in the front, connected to the sides of the device – which are hollow.

This allows air to completely bypass the tongue and most of the mouth. The results, in theory, are said to be incredible – and using the device is said to be very beneficial. The product also features custom fitting – but you need to get fitted by a dentist, which is different from how most mouth pieces work.

Type

This product is technically a Mandibular Advancement Device.

Clinical Studies

There is quite a bit of clinical information about this product listed on the product website, which you can read here. From the sound of it, it has achieved quite a bit of success in the stop-snoring market. It’s been prescribed in private clinical practice since 2009, so it’s also seen quite a bit of use – which is always a good indicator of long-term effectiveness.

Is This Product FDA Cleared?
Yes, this product recently got FDA clearance for the treatment of snoring and OSA – which is actually quite rare. A lot of products have received FDA clearance for the treatment of snoring, but to be cleared to treat OSA is another thing entirely – which makes this product even more impressive.

Price

You can claim the cost for this device on your private health insurance if you have dental – but it’s not necessarily cheap. It will cost you anywhere from $1,390 to $1,750 to buy one, depending on which clinician you go to.

This is quite a bit more expensive than the prices you can expect to pay for other mandibular advancement devices – but you should also keep in mind that this product is simply another step beyond most other stop snoring devices. The O2Vent Mono is also still much cheaper than stop snoring surgery – so it’s important to take all of these things into account.

Obviously, the higher price tag (most other MADs cost less than $200) will most definitely keep it out of some people’s hands, which is a bit unfortunate – but perhaps unavoidable for a device as sophisticated as this one.

The company, Oventus, is a Brisbane-based medical device company. It was established in 2012, and began working with CSIRO in 2013 to develop the Oventus Clearway Device.
The company address, as listed on the official product website, is as follows…

1 Swann Road, Indooroopilly

PO Box 190, Indooroopilly, 4068 QLD Australia

You can also reach them by phone at 1300 533 159.

I haven’t seen anything that could qualify as an official scam complaint about this product. I have seen forum threads where people who use CPAP therapy have discussed the product and the price, and have seen some people in these threads label it as a ‘scam’ that’s attempting to make a quick buck. But in its defense, none of these reports seem to have come from people who have tried the device.

I certainly see no direct indication that this product is a scam of any kind.

How Does The Product Work?

The O2Vent Mono device basically works by using two different methods. First, it slightly advances the jawline – just like any other MAD. But it also has a special breathing port that channels air to the back of the mouth through the device, which helps the air to avoid most of the mouth and tongue. This is said to greatly diminish (or eliminate) both snoring and OSA in the wearer.

What are actual customers saying?

Actual customer seem to be saying mostly good things. A quick look at the Facebook reviews for the product reveal that it has received 4.3 out of 5 stars, which is actually pretty good. It’s also pretty difficult to find complaints online – so kudos to Oventus for developing a device that seems to have a good reputation among its users.

What you can expect

The first few nights might be difficult to get used to. Several customer reviews have said that you might have a tough time getting used to the O2Vent Mono, and for good reason. Sleeping with something in your mouth is always a challenge – but given enough time, getting accustomed to the product isn’t that big of a leap.

Does this brand stack up against the competition?

Yes, this brand does stack up against the competition, and here’s why. This device makes it much easier to breathe because of the way it channels air, which isn’t something that a lot of other devices do.

But with that being said, it’s also much more expensive – maybe not enough to make it worth it for everyone. If you’re looking for an MAD that has FDA clearance to treat OSA, then this is probably a device to look at. But as far as snoring devices in-general are concerned, you might be able to get almost the same affect from a much less expensive product.

Key differences between this product and ‘typical’ solutions

The main difference between the O2Vent Mono and other typical stop-snoring products is the fact that this device channels air differently to help bypass the problem areas of the mouth for snorers. The other main difference is the fact that you cannot fit this device yourself. You need to actually see a dentist to get it fitted – which can be expensive and take up a lot more time.

Is a prescription or doctor involvement needed?

Yes, you will need a dentist to help you get this device. You can’t just order it online.

Pros and cons

Here are the basic pros and cons that we discovered while researching the O2Vent Mono…

Pros

  • It seems to have done very well in pilot studies
  • It’s been in use since 2009
  • It seems very well-made and well-constructed
  • It’s custom fitted, which is a huge bonus
  • It helps to treat not only snoring but also OSA

Cons

  • It’s much more expensive than other typical MADs
  • You need to see a dentist to get one. You can’t just order one online
  • The device can’t be fitted at home. It needs to be printed specifically for your mouth

Conclusion

This product certainly seems to do a good job, but the higher cost will simply make it harder to justify for most people. A lot of people will probably find similar aid through the use of less-expensive MADs. But with that being said, this device is FDA cleared for the treatment of OSA – so there’s a good possibility that it could work for you.

The price-point is higher, but it may certainly be worth it if you’d like to avoid surgery or try a device that’s really top-of-the-line.
