Does snoring get worse as you get older?

As it turns out – it just might!

Snoring affects all of us at one point or another. Whether it’s you, a loved one, a sleeping partner, or a room-mate – odds are good that snoring has had at least some kind of an impact on your life at one time or another.

But believe it or not, your odds of dealing with it will probably increase as time goes on.


Well, as it turns out, snoring might actually get worse as you get older – which means that as you and those around you age, snoring is more and more likely to rear its ugly head while you’re trying to catch some z’s.

But why does this happen? Why does snoring get worse with age, and what can you do to prevent it?

Why does it happen?

Believe it or not, one of the primary reasons for this is that as we age, we tend to gain weight – especially around the neck. As the size of the neck increases, the throat becomes smaller – thus increasing the odds of soft-palate vibrations that cause snoring.

But gaining weight around the neck isn’t the only reason! As people age, they also generally begin to lose muscle tone. This makes the muscles that already exist around the throat ‘flabby’ – which definitely makes you more likely to snore as the years go by!

There are also more subtle causes as well. For example – the hormonal changes that occur during menopause might actually lead to an increase in snoring.

Estrogen (one of the primary female sex hormones) levels tend to drop around this time in a woman’s life – which may lead to further decreases in muscle tone, as estrogen is one of the hormones that helps to preserve it.

How can you prevent it?

There are a number of things that you can do to help prevent (or at least push back) the odds of an increase in snoring. Exercise can be a big help, as it can help to build muscle tone and burn away extra fat. A healthy diet can also help, as it can serve to keep you from gaining weight and can help to keep your height-to-weight ratio within healthier limits.

You can also do some throat exercises. There is some debate as to exactly how much this helps – but it definitely can’t hurt, and it doesn’t take that long. Some foods can also help to decrease your level of snoring. Warm tea and honey are just two examples of foods that might provide you with some relief.

What should you do if you already snore?

If you’ve already become a chronic snorer, then don’t despair! It’s definitely not too late for you – and there are a number of things that you can do to help yourself.

But no matter what you do, remember not to give up. Don’t move to the couch and give up the fight against snoring! You can beat it and give yourself (and your spouse or partner) the quality of sleep that you both deserve!
