How Do You Know If You Snore If You Live Alone?
If no one’s around to hear you, how can you know if you snore?
One thing about snoring that you can be sure of is that your partner will most likely let you know if you snore. They might wait until morning to tell you, or might wake you up and ask you to roll over. But either way, at some point, you’re probably going to find out about it.
But what if you sleep or live by yourself? Some people genuinely wonder if they snore or not, but have no partner to ask. But regardless of whether or not someone hears you, you may still suffer from the negative consequences if you do snore. Snoring can be detrimental to your health. It can increase your risk for a number of different diseases, and even contribute to daytime fatigue and drowsiness.
But snoring often doesn’t wake up the snorer (at least not enough for them to notice).
This leaves the snorer-who-lives-alone with an interesting problem. But thankfully, there are a few things that you can do about it.
Plan to have a friend spend the night
If you’re a social person, then you probably have a friend or a family member in your life who you enjoy spending time with. Try planning a get-together that doubles as an overnight stay. You can watch movies, play video games, or do whatever it is you enjoy doing – but you can also ask them to set an alarm and wake up periodically throughout the night to listen for snoring.
Just try not to drink any alcohol if you plan on doing a test like this – as alcohol can cause snoring in people who don’t normally snore!
At any rate, this should give you a pretty good indication of whether you tend to snore or not.
Download the SnoreLab App
SnoreLab is an app for iOS and Android that records and analyzes your breathing while you’re asleep, and tracks the results. It also records the intensity of any snoring, and even saves sound clips that you can listen to later on.
You can download the app for iOS here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/snorelab-record-your-snoring/id529443604?mt=8. It’s actually free.
The app, which started life strictly for iOS, can also be downloaded to Android phones as well. Here’s a link to the Google Play store and the page where you can install it on your Android device: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.snorelab.app&hl=en
The app seems pretty easy to use, and has a lot of positive reviews.
Look at your symptoms
If you don’t have anyone else to help you spot your snoring problem (or you can’t download or use the SleepLab app), then you may just need to look at your symptoms and figure out if you might be snoring that way. Do you tend to wake up with headaches in the morning? Do you tend to deal with excessive sleepiness during the day, even though you supposedly got plenty of sleep the night before? Do you find yourself gaining weight, and find it particularly difficult to summon enough energy to get through the day?
These signs might not necessarily always be an indicator of snoring or sleep apnea – but sleep apnea and/or a bad case of snoring can certainly cause some of these problems if it’s happening.
Information! If you think that you might be suffering from snoring and don’t have a way to be sure, then it might be worthwhile to go in for a sleep study – just to figure out if you’re actually snoring or not. A sleep study can also help you to determine if your snoring is actually sleep apnea or not – which may be a very important detail to sort out, as sleep apnea is a step above snoring, and can put you at even more risk.
Either way, the important thing is to find out exactly what’s going on. If you fear that you might be snoring, don’t hesitate to take action. Finding a remedy isn’t that difficult, and it could save you a ton of energy and hassle later on.
