Can You Stop Snoring by Playing This Musical Instrument?
Is it possible to stop snoring by playing a musical instrument? It may not occur to most people that taking on a new musical hobby could possibly have an impact on their snoring problem—but as it turns out, it could actually do a lot of good in some cases!
Specifically—in the case of the didgeridoo.
What Is a Didgeridoo?
A didgeridoo, also known as a didjeridu, is, according to Wikipedia, ‘a wind instrument developed by Indigenous Australians of northern Australia, potentially within the last 1,500 years, and still in widespread use today both in Australia and around the world.’
Some would describe it as a sort of wooden trumpet… but it requires a certain skill to use, and that skill may have an impact on your snoring problem!
As it turns out, in order to play the didgeridoo, you need to learn a technique called ‘circular breathing.’ This is a very common technique used by wind-instrumentalists, in which they learn to breathe in through their nose and out through their mouth at the same time.
A lot of people have claimed that circular breathing has helped their snoring problems… but that might not be the only way in which the didgeridoo is helpful.
The instrument also requires you to strengthen your throat muscles, as you need to be able to blow and shape your esophagus pretty strongly to be able to make music with it.
These two things, when combined, seem to give your inner neck and throat a workout that directly helps to lessen your odds of snoring.
How Does It Help Someone Stop Snoring by Playing Music?
Playing the didgeridoo makes the neck and throat stronger from the inside out. It tightens and tones the airway, and this helps to strengthen the inner walls of your throat. This makes the tissues less likely to collapse in on the airway during sleep, when everything is relaxed—because the muscles and tissues will just be firmer.
In one study, which took place back in 2006 and was published by The British Medical Journal, it was shown that for men around the age of 50, playing the didgeridoo for just about a half-an-hour every day, for six days out of the week, correlated to a significant reduction in daytime sleepiness (source).
If you are a snorer, and you would like to try a treatment method that isn’t going to require you to put anything into your body (other than music, of course) or use any stop snoring devices over the course of the night, then learning to play this unique, yet interesting instrument may be an excellent way to help build up your airway muscles.
Obviously, there are other things that you should do as well if you want to stop snoring. Losing weight is probably the first step that anyone who is dealing with snoring should take, and getting plenty of exercise and establishing regular sleeping habits are two more that will do a lot of good to help.
But—playing the didgeridoo has long been hailed as a healthy, holistic snoring solution, and many people today are making wonderful use of it.
Health care professionals do caution, however, that you should always talk to your doctor if you think that you might be suffering from sleep apnea, as it is a much more serious condition than regular snoring (though snoring is the primary symptom) and can definitely impact your health and your risk for disease in the long run.
If you are afraid that you might have sleep apnea, then playing the didgeridoo can help—but you should probably also think about talking to your primary care physician to see what else can be done to help get the problem under control.
Sleep apnea can increase your risk for heart disease and stroke later on in life, and is also linked to Type 2 Diabetes and other diseases… so it is always important to make sure to talk to your doctor if you think you might be dealing with obstructive or central sleep apnea.
