Wish you were getting more sleep? Snoring can definitely impact your quality of sleep – but believe it or not, that’s not the only thing that can have a negative impact on your nightly rest. A lot of different things can contribute to keeping us awake at night – including snoring, our natural sleep cycle, a racing mind, and more.

But thankfully, you’re not powerless. There is a good chance that you can at least help yourself by incorporating a few of these time-tested sleeping tips. As it turns out, getting the sleep that you need doesn’t have to be rocket-science. By making a few simple changes to your life and routine, you can greatly increase your odds of getting more of the rest that your body craves.


Try to adopt a steady schedule

Getting up and going to bed at regular times can do wonders for your quality of sleep. People who keep inconsistent hours might find themselves either extremely tired when they need to be awake, or unable to fall asleep when it’s time to go to bed. Keeping regular hours can do a lot to get your body into a natural rhythm.


Avoid naps if they cause you to stay up later

Napping can be an awesome way to catch up on lost sleep – but believe it or not, it can also do more harm than good if it causes you to stay up later than you’re used to.

If you find that napping tends to throw off your nightly routine, you might want to try either taking shorter naps or eliminating them altogether. Keeping your nap short (under an hour) might also be a good idea that could help you to avoid disrupting your body’s natural sleeping pattern.


Utilize natural light during the day

Letting as much natural light into your workspace as possible will help to solidify your body’s natural sleeping rhythm. Your brain interprets sunlight as ‘awake time’, which is why you might tend to get tired more easily if you work in a dark atmosphere. To counteract this, open the windows and let some light in. If this isn’t possible, try buying a light therapy box or some other type of UV light to help stimulate this response in your brain.


Exercise

Incorporating some exercise (even a little bit) into your routine can do wonders for your quality of sleep. It helps to clear your mind, eliminate stress, and floods your body with feel-good chemicals. It also helps to ‘wear you out’ a little bit – which will prepare you for a more restful night’s sleep once you finally get laid down for bed.


Make sure that your bed is comfortable

A comfortable bed is like a lot of life’s simple pleasures, in that you might not notice it until it’s gone! Do you tend to wake up sore, with a stiff neck or a cramped shoulder? If so, then an uncomfortable bed or pillow might be to blame. Try looking into a different mattress. You might also be able to buy a mattress pad to make it a bit more comfortable at first, if you’re not sure whether or not you want to commit to paying for another mattress at first.

Finding ways to get a better night’s sleep can be a challenge; but it can also make your life better. As long as you keep trying and stay creative, there’s really no limit to what you can accomplish. Just remember that sleep is super-important, and that you don’t want to waste those ‘later’ hours tossing and turning when you could be allowing your body to rejuvenate and recharge.
