Often, we view snoring as a hassle, or a nuisance. If you choose to just ignore your snoring, your partner might jab you in the ribs and tell you to move over in the middle of the night. If your partner snores, you might nudge them and tell them that they’re snoring and ask them to move. If it gets too bad, one of you might move to the couch or the spare bedroom.

But really, in the grand scheme of things, snoring tends to be ignored by the vast majority of people.

Well, an article that was published by Huffingtonpost.com recently showed us some figures that we found staggering – and as it turns out, you might have a very, very good reason to stop ignoring your snoring problem today, and get it checked out asap.

Why? Because it may be a symptom of a dangerous medical disorder called obstructive sleep apnea – but if you don’t get it checked out or seek to fix it, you may go your entire life without knowing that it’s happening, and how it could be adversely affecting your health and well-being.

What Is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

OSA is a medical disorder in which the individual suffering from it actually stops breathing periodically throughout the night, due to a blocked airway (usually caused by collapsed tissue in the back of the throat). This will sound a lot like snoring to the average person – but in truth, there’s a big difference between regular snoring and sleep apnea.

Information! If you suffer from sleep apnea, you’ll actually stop breathing for up to ten seconds several times per hour.

When this happens, your brain detects that you’re not getting the oxygen you need, and will ‘wake you up’ so that you’ll take a breath. When you do, you’ll settle back to sleep – often none the wiser that the entire event happened, because you’ll never fully gain consciousness.

As a result, your sleep will be periodically interrupted dozens (if not hundreds) of times during the night.

Why Is Sleep Apnea Such a Big Deal?

The bad thing about sleep apnea is that it can severely inhibit the quality of your rest – which can put you at an increased risk for a number of different problems, diseases, and conditions. According to new data from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, OSA affects approximately 29.4 million Americans. But the startling thing about this number is that 80% of those who suffer from it don’t know that they have it!

Sleep apnea can increase your risk for diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and heart disease – just to name a few. The new data also found out that undiagnosed sleep apnea costs the United States about $149.6 billion – which is a huge expense that you may be paying into if you have obstructive sleep apnea and don’t realize it.

What You Can Do – Don’t Ignore Your Snoring Any Longer

Do you have a snoring problem? Do you tend to feel sleepy throughout the day? Do you deal with excessive daytime fatigue for no apparent reason?

If any of these are true, then it might be worth visiting your doctor to find out. A sleep test can identify obstructive sleep apnea without a problem – and getting it fixed could save you a ton of money, make you healthier, and greatly improve your energy levels throughout the day.

Doctors recommend that adults need between 7 and 9 hours of sleep every night to be healthy – and OSA can certainly keep you from getting as much as you need.

So don’t ignore your snoring problem. If your spouse starts to complain that you’re snoring, then make a point to think about paying your doctor a visit. It could save your sleep in the long run – and if you end up getting diagnosed with OSA, you’ll be glad that you didn’t just push the problem to the back-burner.
